Brian,
I don't think we can assume that the block and heads came from the same car - even if that is what the seller says. I would agree that the later cars would likely come with the D238 or even the FXX8 dated heads that had the 96 on the center ports.
Both this and the WY block you posted are interesting, do you have a picture of the casting number?
PS, I may be selling one of my 68 XW motors if anybody needs one.
