Actually, there were a few 5 speed manual O/D trannies used in the late '80s. They were VERY fragile units with a low torque capacity, used mainly in 4 cyl and V6 applications. GM and Ford introduced O/D automatics in '80-'81, once again with LOTS of teething problems and low torque capacity. It wasn't until the early-to-mid '90s thar HD, high-performance O/D transmissions - both manual and auto - became commonplace however.
