I have used the Bearing type Pilot in the past (in the early days) and hammered a couple of the bearings with powershifting, (the bearings would no longer turn smoothly).
When I went to a Lakewood Scattershield I also used the "block saver" plate so that spaced the input shaft the thickness of the plate farther out too.
At that point I went to a machine shop with some bronze "oilite" material and had them turn me a few of the bushings that were the same OD (+.0005) and ID except now the bushing length was longer.
I have never hurt the transmission input bearing since but I did hurt it with the original bearing type input shaft bearings. The bushing will take a lot of abuse with at best very slight distortion (enlarging of the hole).
