You can't find a much worse environemet for a rifle than the Mekong jungle. We cleaned our weapons often and only loaded 18 rounds into the magazines. There were issues with spring pressure causing jams. There were only a few problems with the M16 that I knew of and those were caused by poor maintenance or failure to load only 18 rounds into the magazine.
The first issue of M16's did have problems but I was issued mine in February 1968 and it was a second generation M16. Over the course of three years I carried a number of different weapons but always knew the M16 was a great weapon.
