Try and find the part # near the rear edge of the block (near the distributor)
Usually a 979*** number. This will get you in the ballpark. Also, if you look in the lifter valley, between the lifters bores, you will see raised letters that help identify the cubic inch size. (IE '00' for 400, '55' for 455, etc. You will have to remove the intake and valley pan to see this area. Some engines also had the engine size on the sides of the block, near the motor mount holes.
