I see what you mean about the styles and agree that it would be very odd to use one case style, switch to a different style, then switch back.
Therefore, I've got to assume that these are indeed replacements. The first car belonged to a friend that bought it 1971 and he swears that he never changed the sender. How a replacement got installed is a mystery. The second car was a 17K mile 400 firebird from southern california and I wouldn't have thought the sender would have been changed that early but must have been.
We also dug up a third one shown in front. This one appears to be an earlier style as the top terminal is screwed on (matches the 70 style shown in the other thread). The other two units have the terminal rivieted on which would be a cost/reliability improvement to the original sender and thus couldn't predate the bolt on version.
I concede - you're right.
