My dad's newer Excursion with a 7.3 Powerstroke gets 26 mpg on the freeway and 22 around town...and thats in a 7000lb beast...it can still manage 18 pulling the boat up hill to shasta lake, or 16-17 average to trinity lake. Diesels are definatly...very impressive. It's kinda weird to think, even those old 6.2 diesels your talking about, still get around what my LS1 car gets....
