If Paul is not pleased by Dan's great build then he is a tough man to make happy. Paul should be a very quick man this fall.
Dan built a motor that was intended to be able to certify at will. With this in mind we have one truly accurate SD build.
Paul has never rebuilt the trans or replaced the original converter. Both have been done and are ready to participate with the fresh SD motor.
Paul's old motor had several tough items that needed to be addressed to save the block and this may have compromised the old build more than anticipated after seeing these new numbers.
I have always thought the best strength a HO has over the SD is torque. In the past the SD's with their much larger duration all gave up tq for rev. A lot of tq in the past but this car has a maxed out compression ratio on its side this time and of course those excellent SD heads just waiting to take advantage of it. With all good uncrompromised parts this time and Dan's expert ability to put a motor together...
Ok enough stalling. Our HO's are in serious trouble here guys. I hate to say it but it is true. This SD has a real opportunity to run heads up with any HO. Thank god those SD cars are all a bit porky compared to HO's as that may have to be a bit of a saving grace.
A really good HO so far will make around 532@3300 tq and 403@4800 hp. Paul's SD made 534@3300 tq and 420.5@5000 hp! Yes you read that correctly. Two more lb-ft tq and 17 hp. More rev as expected due to the bigger cam SD's use which also has alway's allowed Paul to run a 3.90 gear compared to the 3.73's the HO's need. Those numbers are flat fantastic and then consider it is a low compression motor. The hp is compromised a bit due to the compression but those
That is just about enough power to offset the 200 lb weight penalty of Paul's car over a HO T/A or T-37. Add in an auto trans and this should be one fast SD. Dead legal SD also. This could really level the playing field between the two cars.
The first time I ever went drag racing when I was 16 a pair of 100% original auto SD and HO T/A's were there. They ran within a couple thou all day. I think history may repeat itself here.
Congrats to Paul and Dan. That car should really move out. The motor comes back over here this week for us to install with a few weeks for some Test and Tune before Stanton.
Anyone want to put a guess on the ET? I will save my guess to see what everyone thinks first.
