A mechanical fuel pump is unlikely to be producing too much pressure. Their are only a few aftermarket pumps that run higher than stock pressures for Pontiacs. The return lines goes to the pump not the line that goes to the carburetor. The fuel pump should have a threaded connection for the carb line and a push on outlet for the return line. Usually the return lines are connected to the pump with 5/16" rubber hose. Hope this helps.
