If by chance he broke the inner ring, it could go out of balance, but not by much. Sounds like finger pointing to me. A whole lot more would have to go wrong to do that sort of damage, over a period of time to boot. If I pulled into the burnout pit with a bad vibration, think I would make the run? NOT. A single run with a slightly out of balance damper is not going to do what you described. Something else was going on. Even with a broken inner ring it would still absorbe some of the harmonics. Unless it was totally shattered. Like I said, not much room for error.
