I know what you mean with these adapters. My setup is the exact opposite of your's in that I am using a set to use a 77 block in my 69. I also think they position the engine somewhat more back as I had difficulty with the trans mount bolts. I can't picture it right now but I also think my fan might be more out of the shroud than it should be.
Another problem I had which you might not have had was that the plates made the mount width too wide and to get both mounts in the frame stands, I had to bolt 1 side in and then use a pipe and a sledge hammer to force the other mount into the stand to get the bolt in.
