Maybe go under sized a little, and finish to correct size with a cylinder/roll sander might be a good way to avoid messing up woodgrain around cut edges.
Ideally, i'd do a test on a crap bezel first.

I sourced this piece a few years ago for a local guy who built a kick azz Formula drag car. He wanted one he could cut his own holes for aftermarket gauges. This one has a lot of blank space for that.

Never ran into him again after i found it, and been too slack to try and locate him.
