All good advice here; just a couple minor comments:

a) Yes - a 2x6 makes a good "joist". I had a couple that were left over from the kids' playscape and that's what I used when I took the body off my Chevelle. I lifted the body using two floor jacks (one on each side of the 2x6), then lifting one end of the car at a time.

I narrowed the frame on my car while I was doing this, so I had the body on and off about 15 times as I was fabricating/making clearance.

b) Also - if you have a couple bare wheels (wheels with no tires on them) you can bolt that to the axle in place of tire/wheel assemblies. That will make the frame lower and you can roll it in and out without having to get the body up so high.
