Bart,I dont know where or how you got the impression the stacked plate style coolers are more resistant to damage than the tube & fin style coolers,but I would hafta say from my days as a ford tech,that is'nt really all that true,they are just as easily damaged as any other cooler.

The problem is'nt design,it's material thickness,the metal they make these coolers outta is just too damn thin to stand up to a good debris hit @ speed.

All OE aux. coolers on HD ford vehicles (trucks) are the stacked plate variety,and I can tell you first hand they will fail just as easily as any other cooler if it's exposed to direct hits from road debris.

In my days at the ford dealerships,I replaced dozens of them myself,and I was'nt even really the trans tech there,the trans guy would usually diagnose the thing,and pass them off to a line tech as they did'nt really pay all that well to replace,and they usually had more than enough bigger/harder jobs to do.

But suffice it to say,my beliefs on this subject changed quite a bit after all that.

I personally think that's about the worst place to mount the cooler.
