Head gaskets don't 'suddenly blow'. Something caused it. From reading this , it seems you are telling the whole story.
how many miles since the heads have been off? were they retorqued?
Was the motor running hot?
Was it detonating?
First, I'd pull the plugs and then see if you can rotate the motor with a breaker bar on the crank bolt. It'll probably turn over. Do that first.
Then, depending on what happens above.
I'd pull the heads first and leave the short in the chassis. Drain the oil and look at it.
It is also hard to believe all that happend in under a half of a second.
