Forgive me for asking a probably oft discussed question, but exactly what were the differences in body styling for 1965 and 1966? I'm guessing the trim tag was special as well?
Is there anything wrong with cloning a common Catalina convert from 1966 into a 2+2 (so long as it is not misrepresented as such)?

Yopu are basically correct with the SS analogy.
The 2+2 was introduced in 64 as a sporty Catalina (but basically a Ventura) with bucket seats. The standard engine was a 389 2bbl, with 389 and 421 4bbl and 3x2 being available. In 65, the standard engine was a 338 horse 421 4 bbl. In 67 the standard was a 360 horse 428.
