Cables need hooked up like you first stated. Battery hot on one side, and starter cable on the other side with no power. When you engage the ford solenoid the starter gets power.

So tell us again how you've got it wired up. You may have a bad ford solenoid, if it's staying engaged with no purple wire hooked up.
