Paul, anyone that has 13 classic Pontiacs in his signature and works on performance cars for a living is an expert in my book!
While working in the garage on my car today I thought up a list of a few other things that could possibly be causing the smell problem. But I think most of these would have other symptoms so reaching..
Bad fuel pump - causing low fuel pressure at lower RPM (seen this before)
Ignition timing wrong - frozen mech advance, slipped balancer, something like that
Cam timing way off - would have to have been installed incorrectly
Crushed exhaust pipe - easy to check
Carb problem, I think we covered that.. but is the choke opening properly?
