There's a article in the current HPP that goes over the basics of GM's OD trannys.

For racing I think the 4L6X/4L7X/4L8X series can handle power and traction. I have a 700R4 which went in in Nov 2007 two years ago. Its been great, takes everything
my 400 engine can dish out every day and the deep 3.06 1st gear is a blast!

Basically I needed something strong enough for the street that I can beat the crap
out of it every day without breaking the bank or worrying about it breaking.
I have put about 16,000 hard miles on it in two years and am very happy with it.
