The Cougar has more than enough room for a Pontiac even with the shock towers still in it. If a 390 and a 460 will fit between them a 400/455 will. The problem you will have is the crossmember and steering linkage. The Cougar used a front sump and the rear sump will hit the stock steering. They are rear steer like a 1st gen bird, so if you convert them to front steer like the Mustang II front end the crossmember is easy to move.

Put some CV1 heads on it and they just might think its a rear distributor Cleveland. My 67 Cougar has a Cleveland in it, thought about a Pontiac since I have a good selection, but the steering linkage mods keep me from messing with the idea much.

I'll pass those pics along to some Mustang guys and see what they say.
