Ohhhh.....
That's why....
Someone mentioned, further back in the thread, "shorting" the tracks with a jumper. We call it "shunting" and it appears that a train is on the tracks ahead. I know with our system, it'll stop the train dead as long as it's far enough ahead of it.
Am I right in assuming that that is NOT the case with a diesel locomotive? It just alerts someone, somewhere, that there is something on the tracks?
