I know this thread has been dead for a while, but I thought I'd give an update. The car ended up sitting in storage most of the last 7 months due to moving to a different home and all the fun that goes with that (as well as winter). I finally got some nice weather and time to play with the car this last weekend.

I put a dial-back timing light on the car and watched the advance. I had initial timing set at 10*. Idle set at 800 initially. Almost immediately off idle, the advance would start to come in. After an easy wind up to 2500rpm, I'd bring it back down to idle. Timing would hang up at 14-16* and idle would be up over 1000rpm. I inspected the weights and springs--the weights were free and had lube. I should note now this distributor is an eBay $50 HEI. The springs were my problem; they're very light. I did an experiment and used the heavy springs from my original points distributor. Yes I know they won't allow full advance but I wanted to see if they would solve my problem. I ran the engine up several times and each time it would idle back down to the correct timing and rpm. Bingo, identified the problem.

Now I just have to get the issue resolved. I have sent an email to Sun Tuned to get info on having my distributor recurved; haven't gotten a response yet. I may look at other options if I don't hear back--not sure if he's still doing recurves.

A side note: I was using an Actron dial-back light with rpm display. There is about a 300rpm difference between my tach and the rpm display on my timing light. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this?
