You think you had it bad, people in Minnesota go to Missouri looking for rust free cars. It wasn't so much that the mechanicals wore out, it was the bodies - when I was a kid in the 1950s and 1960s it wasn't uncommon to see cars that were only a couple years old that already had major rust holes. It really wasn't until the 1980s that the auto manufacturers got a handle on corrosion resistance.
