I worked at a Shell station that didn't have the auto shutoff nozzles - had to stand there and hopefully listen for the gas starting to bubble up into the filler neck. If there was any extra noise around we couldn't tell and the gas would shoot out and usually get us. The nozzles would stay on high and spew gasoline everywhere until it was clicked off manually. It was a very happy day for us pump jockeys when the owner finally broke down and purchased the new nozzles.
