Good description.

You nailed it, i'm worried that if i pull this apart i won't be able to get it working again.

But, i can't tell if i Have to remove the lever pivot to get the broken end out, it looked to
me that it was corroded/glued in, so the lever assembly needs to come out, this fine piece
of work needs some kind of award:

looks like joe handyman tried to hone his automotive repair skills with a jigsaw...

maybe i'll try poking it out, but i get the feeling that the pivot needs to come out...
