In his book Alcohol can be a gas David Blumes says the following:
"you can convert your car more closely to an ideal alchohol engine by increasing its compression to take advantage of alcohols high octane rating. With its practical rating of 105, you should be able to run alcohol in an engine with a compression ration from 12:1 to 18:1, and sometimes a little higher, without experienceing pinging or preignition.
So as the % of ethanol (alcohol ) increases our higher compresion stock motors should actually run better and burn cleaner or am I missing something .
