I know it seems crazy since you've already cut in other areas.....but I wouldnt cut the fenders. What about making a pice to fit right in that spot on each side to give it a finished look? Could use your imagination and make almost any shape, from simple to.....different. You could sorta make a narrow "bumper/valence" that wraps around into there.
