One "pass" with a A-10 Warthog and you are history. The Government has lots of A-10s. They also have lots of Tanks.
Libyan Rebels are getting their butts kicked by Qadafi's troops.
One guy with a M-16 has little chance against the Government, (Think Randy Weaver & his family/ friend against the F.B.I. ).
There are hundreds, if not thousands of "Libyan Rebels" who would be Vulture Food if not for countries like the US and Britain.
You are not going to fight the U.S. Government with M-16 type weapons.
The U.S. Government will be around even though it might be a weak government like Greece or France or even Britain is today vs the world power that they were at one point in their history.
That being said, what the M-16, or the 1911, or the HK P-30 does for you is keep the scum bags from taking advantage of you in everyday life. "Personal Defense" is where it is at today. With the money drying up in the federal/ state/ and local governments, there are fewer LEOs out there to give the impression to the bad guys to go elsewhere. Therefore the Right to Carry for Personal Defense is more and more valid every day.
I see nothing wrong with having a gun or several guns, and several hundred rounds of ammo (when you can buy it or reload it somewhat cheaply). See nothing wrong with harvesting a deer every year, a moose (if you have the money to accomplish that deal), or an elk, if you have Little Jack's money. Several S.F friends out west supplement their food budget with wild game throughout the year.
Food, shelter, water, ammo, and fuel. They all have importance in daily life. Ammo & water more so these days with the minimal LEO and Fireman presence in most communities these days.

The govt. can`t go against us. If they kill us all, who will get up in the morning to produce and have their pockets picked?
Even if they took out thier "rebels", what`s left in this dumbed down society for an economy to exist on?
And, if the orders are given to go against us, do you think they will get 100% coperation from the troops? Or, will they have UN peacekeepers to do that?
I still believe in the 3 "B`s". Bible, Beans, Bullets; in that order.
One has to know his enemy 1`st, then he has to stay alive for him to even pick up a fire arm.
