Cliff, chrome bore and other components are chromed for corrosive ammo use. When buying some ammo (7.62 x 39 as an example) it will state on the box corrosive or Non-corrosive. Chroming allows corrosive ammo to be used without corroding the barrel and associated components. You are right, you should clean your gun but chroming has nothing to do with being reliable. I never saw an SKS without a chrome bore. Even so everything being equal and clean both will be reliable, it is inherit by design. Also, I don't even waste my time bench resting these types of rifles. Mine are shot and treated the same way they might get used. I try to buy the same mfg. of ammo, as different ammo will vary and consequently affect the zero. Yes, the AR15 and variants are more accurate but adding the human element of imperfection they are all combat accurate. My personal choice for civil unrest (God forbid)AK 47. Also, when I stated to "stand up and shoot like a man" I meant to fully support the rifle by ones self only with on other supports as this forces more mental concentration and muscle control. At least for me it does.
