Add a diode in series with the wire that goes to alt terminal #1, (idiot lite circuit). Install the diode with the band end of the diode (cathode) pointing to wards the alt. That'll keep the alt from backfeeding to the ignition.

George, thanks so much for the insight. It's been driving me nuts to say the least. Is there a certain size diode, I assume I can just pick the right one up from Radio Shack.
