Matt I ran a Hurst Qtr stick same issues(68 firebird). I ran the next size longer cable than came with the shifter. Had to relocate cable hole in floor closer to firewall and a little bit closer to my u joint underneath, but noticed drag on cable was much less with the "looser" loop.
Cable was B+M heavy duty not standard.
I had the car 4 years after that and no issues. Lots of street miles too. (full manual valve body)
I have seen guys have problems due to exhaust heat too. They dont like getting cooked.
