Matt,reread Bud Lyons post and make sure the engine is grounded well to both the body and the frame.

Often the shifter cable ends up acting as the primary ground path if there is no better path for it to use,and that leads directly to rapid shifter cable deterioration.

Very common problem,especially in older cars with poor body/chassis grounding.
