Ron, the "maybe 30 years ago", takes us back to 1981. You're inferring GM's problems is all from the lack of quality product they put out 30 years ago? GM built a lot of crap all the way through the 80's & up through the 90's. Sure there were a few bright spots, but a ton of junk product as well. My family used to buy all GM. My dad worked as a salaried GM employee for 36 years. As the 80's rolled in, he was out of Grand Prixs in '78 & out of TransAms upon the 3rd Gens being hatched, & into buying higher end personal luxury type GM vehicles. After retirement, he lived next door to & was good friends with our local GM plant manager (now retired). The GM influence was strong. My family, as a large extended family were diehard GM, & esp Pontiac, & Chevy pickup buyers.
I'll cut to the chase, a bunch of rapidly depreciating crap product slowly turned every one of our extended family off GM. Well over 60 adults + countless friends & other contacts. The fit & finish & the durability was not there. In our extended family, have three aunts & uncles who owned Caddy's Northstar V8's, each had the head sealing problems (out of warranty). 1 of them paid several thousand to fix his, then got rid of it. The other two, parked theirs & eventually managed to limp them to the dealer & each get a taxpayer funded "credit" in the Obummer bogus Cash for Clunkers deal. My parents said "NO" to Cadillac, & after several turbo diesel Mercedes (great cars BTW), they have driven Lexus (Toyota) products for the last 12 years. In that time, I bought a new 4Runner. My brother & his wife have owned Lexus & a 90's LandCruizer for years. Each one of them, the most dependable quality vehicles, we have ever driven or owned. Not a single thing has ever gone wrong with our V6 4Runner. I have local friends with late model GM SUV's that are routinely taking them to the shop to fix this or fix that, not oil changes. I've driven in a bunch of new GM products over the last 10 years, & their quality is definitely up, but am I ready to buy a "made in America" GM product, no possible way.
