IIRC, that was actually in the early 90's when the discussion was bringing it back for the 30th anniversary (1994).
I'm proud that Pontiac refused to play the 4 or 6 cylinder game with the GTO, like Ford and Chrysler have done with their heralded "names".
A GTO always meant at 5.7L or larger V8 engine, 2 doors and a manual transmission option.
