Spindles won't fit without mods.
I'd adapt a 700r4 before bolting in a 2004r and depending on the gear ratio of the car now the OD may actually lower milage due to lugging the engine. I'd use a TH350 is this the case for a couple reasons. It's a bolt in except for the detent cable and extra shift position. It's got less parasitic drain than the TH400 does.
Disc brakes are relatively common and kits are cheap for that car. 64-72 A body interchange.
