I wasn't the shining example of a great recovery so I would have been a lousy subject for having both done at the same time. It was enough of a problem getting around the first few weeks, and not having the untouched hip to support most of the weight would have stopped me cold.

As far as waiting. My 45 year old daughter has arthritis which has deformed her hands and feet. The wiz-bang specialist of the day when she was in her early twenties told her that the surgery would only last so long, and to wait as long as possible to have the reconstruction surgery. She waited as instructed, and finally could not wait any longer. The specialists down at UCLA Medical Center said it was a shame she had waited because of the soft tissue damage. They said that she would have been much better off getting the first surgery and then would have had only minor corrective surgery later on and the surrounding tissue and muscle would have been in much better shape.

I would look at it like you can have the hip replaced, and because of the normal joint movement and lack of pain you will lead a full life and you will wear the hip out. Or you can hobble around and not enjoy life trying to get the last ounce out of the bad hip.

Thinking of the hip like a tire, I'd go for the new set and run the hell out of my car instead of trying to get by on bald tires and never take the car anywhere for fear of a blowout.
