Maybe this isn't a common issue. This is a photo of the rear of one of the 8ft long cast rocker moldings for a 66 Bonneville. They are kinda ribbed on the outside, chrome with black in the furrows. There are supposed to be pins (about an inch long - I'll take a picture tonight) that attach to the back of the molding and are inserted into clips in the body to hold the whole thing on.
Originally the pins are inserted into the molding and then, as mrrat1 suggested, the extra metal is folded over the head of the pin to hold them fast. The trouble is that when you take the molding off the car 40 years later, the pins are often yanked out of the molding and the extra metal that once held the pin cracks off and ends up as little pieces in the driveway. This is what happened in the pictured molding.
By the way, there are a bunch of pins, perhaps about 6 per side, and most are broken off.
