We call them stickers here in Pa. too.
Had a bunch growing from the woods around my house onto my yard. I rented a pole chainsaw and cut them off at the root - that killed them. Let em dry out a few weeks then I rented a small tractor and just pushed them back into the woods. Don't bother with a chipper - if they're like the ones I had it won't pull them in.
