I have already installed the passengers side, and it installs flat and looks good without this plate. But, on the drivers side there is no metal on the left side of the vent to stabilize it and make it lay flat. Without some support, the vent will not lay flat, but on the passengers side there is plenty of metal to make it install correctly. Also, the restoration guide exploded view only shows the plate on the drivers side, which makes sense to me.
