Always better to run the fuel out of the carb. Alternative is to let it evaporate out and leave deposits. The added shutoff valve is no different than the needle valve in the carb being shut off by the float and dead heading the pump. Mechanical pumps spend their running life under pressure. Actually their lever pushes up against a spring and the spring pushes down on the diaphragm and creates pressure. As the pump builds pressure the diaphragm and spring stay up and the arm basically cycles with no load.
