Toyota recalled a number of trucks in Japan for a defective steering column but chose to wait nearly a year before recalling them in North America, despite a series of complains in the United States regarding the issue. The revelation comes on the heels of a $16.4 million fine imposed by the U.S. government as punishment for Toyota delaying the recalls of millions of vehicles over accelerator pedals that stick open unintentionally.
The latest recall involves a defective steering column, and failure could lead to the driver being unable to steer the vehicle and turn its wheels. Toyota initially claimed that the recall was issued in Japan because driving conditions put more strain on the affected parts and denied that there was an issue in North America. However the Associated Press investigated the matter and found numerous complains to Toyota’s customer service, legal and warranty department. The National Highway Traffics Safety Association has linked the defect to 16 crashes, three deaths and seven injuries.
“Japanese manufacturers rarely recall products without a fight. It is an image and pride issue, and it has been like this for decades,” said Rebecca Lindland, an analyst with IHS Automotive. “They don’t want to admit that they have a systemic defect in their cars because it hurts their reliability image.”
Toyota paid record federal fines of nearly $50 million two years ago for failing to promptly inform regulators of defects in its vehicles and for delaying recalls.
It was Honda’s third big recall of the week. Altogether, the automaker recalled 1.4 million Civics, CR-Vs, Accords and Pilots sold in the U.S. to fix a variety of safety issues.
All car companies have been caught with their pants down, GM, Ford, Chrysler, don't put foreign makers on a pedestal because they hardly deserve it. Mitubishi, Honda, Toyota, Subaru, have all tried the Egyptian way to deal with product defects, DE-NILE.................................  |
X2! None of the car makers would recall anything if they could get away with it. DOn't think any of them "care" that much about you. They are in business to make money, plain and simple.
FYI, every late model Toyota we have had in lately for weird throttle isues-idle too high, cutting off, driving down the road without hitting the gas, and stumbling, have all need new electronic throttles. This is an expensive defect a lot of them seem to be sharing. A freind of mine recently got rid of his '05 Tacoma due to repeated issues with it, and got an older model Tundra that didn't have the electronic throttle nonsense.
