I used a push-button as a starter switch to bypass the ignition switch. I'd leave the ignition off and start the engine turning with no spark. It always turned over like a champ, even if it would drag terribly if I used the ignition switch to try to start. I was running right at 11 to 1 with RAIV heads. If the engine was hot, you would swear it was trying to fire with no spark and going to catch at any second, but wouldn't truly fire until the key was turned on.
