While I think the Salt doesn't help anything, I also don't think its the salt. I think our humid climate hurts them, but its just a crap design IMO. I took my borescope & slid it into the hole in the rocker. Its a mess in there, no question the rust started on the inside & is working its way out. I'll see if I can take some pictures, its quite surprising in a bad way.
