Hmmm...we have NBC Sports on channel 174 (high def) and regular on channel 75 (non HD). I have an HDTV, so I always watch the HD version of F1, NASCAR, NFL, NHL, etc.
My friend, who does not have an HD box, said that Speed Channel (on channel 72, which it's been for at least 15 years now) suddenly disappeared. He talked to Comcast and they said they moved Speed Channel to another tier, so he had to pay $5 to get the next level of programming. After about an hour of fuming, he called Comcast again, spoke to a manager, and he said that they just MOVED Speed Channel from channel 72 to 408 (non HD). It wasn't pushed to another tier.
Well, thanks for the warning, Comcast.
Anyway, he's back up and running, and did not have to pay for the extra tier.
I wonder if all this shuffling has to do with the new Fox Sports Network coming in August. It will be the first 24/7 sports channel to go head-to-head with ESPN. They'll have the same format, commentators behind a desk, highlights, etc, and show a lot of MLB and NASCAR from I understand.
It will be interesting to see what happens. Right now, basic cable packages do NOT include ESPN, and most opt for the next higher tier because they can't live without sports. When Fox Sports comes along, they may include it in basic cable, drawing in a huge audience that may soon forget about ESPN.
