You might want to consider removing the woodgrain from your 1972 wheel. Underneath the woodgrain is smooth black plastic. The woodgrain is a tin covering/skin that can be popped off. Try it with one of the three horn buttons and you will see what I mean. Just take your time so that you do not end up bending the tin wood grain too much to where you can't use it again.
