There were tens of thousands of 1964-1972 GTO's built that were slower than 1973-1974 GTO's.

Nobody stated that 1/4 mile times had anything to do with what a real GTO is. But the simple fact is that the 64-72 GTO's are perceived to be better performing cars than the 73/74's. Isn't that why the GTO (and all other Musclecars) became popular initially because of their performance??
