Might not be common for the early engines, but I had a crank in a 67 400 block many years ago that wasn't cut for the pilot bearing. Discovered it after the rebuild was complete and the engine was in the car.

Funny thing is it looked like it was cut but the bearing would not go in. A mic showed the hole dia was way under. Ended up having to pull the engine, remove the crank and put in on a lathe...

I recommend checking with a bearing to be sure.
