I don't think there's supposed to be anything between them. Just a thought -- I wonder if the lock plate is on upside down. If that's possible, would that do it?
Edit: jadams, did you have to use a lockplate depressor tool to take the lockplate off? If you didn't need to, something is wrong (like maybe the plate is on upside down).
