I would still recommend using a fixed height throw out. It's very rare that one of the 3 fixed height ones won't work, and it's very rare one of the two factory pivot balls won't work. If I recall correctly, the long pivot ball is for pre-1967 bell housings, the short is for '68-up, but don't quote me on that.
I've seen adjustable pivot balls fail.
