I think you are very close there. If needed maybe a second C clamp to bring down the strap before hammering the tab home.
My recollection is the originals do the same thing... Namely that the taper of the tab doesn't fully penetrate the square hole.... Boy is that hard to explain in type
I'll try to upload some pictures of existing and repro clamps showing similar end conditions.
The springs look great! What colors did you use?
